The Broadcom acquisition of VMware has everyone re-evaluating their hypervisor strategy. Nutanix AHV, KVM, Proxmox — the alternatives are getting more attention than ever. But there’s one option that’s been sitting right under everyone’s nose that deserves a serious look: Microsoft Hyper-V.

I know, I know. In the VMware world, Hyper-V has historically been treated as the budget option. But having worked with both extensively, I think that reputation is outdated.

Where Hyper-V Actually Shines

If you’re already a Microsoft shop — and let’s be honest, most enterprises are — Hyper-V integrates seamlessly with your existing tooling. System Center, Azure Arc, Windows Admin Center, PowerShell — it’s all native.

For Windows Server workloads specifically, Hyper-V performance is excellent. Microsoft has spent years optimizing the hypervisor for their own operating system, and it shows. The enlightened I/O path for Windows guests is genuinely fast.

Licensing is the other big factor. If you’re running Windows Server Datacenter edition, Hyper-V is included. You’re already paying for it. With VMware’s new Broadcom licensing model pushing costs up significantly, the math has changed.

Where VMware Still Wins

Let me be clear — this isn’t a “Hyper-V is better than VMware” argument. VMware’s ecosystem is still superior in several areas: the distributed switch, vMotion reliability at scale, the storage policy framework (SPBM), and the overall maturity of the management plane.

If you’re running a heterogeneous environment with Linux workloads, complex networking requirements, and need features like NSX or vSAN, VMware is still the stronger choice.

The Multi-Hypervisor Approach

What I’m advocating for is pragmatism. Instead of being a single-hypervisor shop, consider matching the hypervisor to the workload:

VMware for your most critical, complex workloads that need the full feature set — distributed networking, storage policies, advanced DRS.

Hyper-V for Windows-heavy workloads, dev/test environments, and scenarios where the Microsoft integration story matters more than advanced virtualization features.

Cloud-native (containers, serverless) for new application development that doesn’t need a traditional hypervisor at all.

This isn’t just theoretical. I’ve seen this work in practice at organizations that were able to reduce their VMware footprint (and licensing costs) by 30-40% by moving appropriate workloads to Hyper-V, while keeping VMware for the workloads that genuinely needed it.


The hypervisor market is more competitive than it’s been in a decade. That’s good for everyone. The key is making strategic decisions based on workload requirements, not vendor loyalty.
